Thunderstruck: A Night of Classic Rock | The Brunswick | Brighton Fringe

Blue Violin is a musician with a twist! Using a recording box and electric violin, he creates music that has a classical musical fusion, making popular rock and pop songs unique and interesting to listen to.

At the time of review, whilst the emphasis was on rock songs, Blue Violin made his Brighton Fringe debut a strong one. He played with the idea of turning songs such as Thunderstruck, I’m Just Ken, Footloose, and The Devil Went Down to Georgia on their heads through the power of music and recorded loops over occasional backing tracks. This created an experience that was as electric as the violin and yet had the feel of being part of a one-man orchestra. He created each song as a musically visual experience and occasionally sang at times when appropriate. Whilst the emphasis was on the music, the vocals added an additional layer of quality to the work and left us wanting more.

Blue Violin’s precision on the strings was extremely well timed with the recording box loops and you could tell he loved all he did from the way he moved across the stage as he played, interacted with the audience, shared personal stories from his own creative journey over the years and enabled an atmosphere that was upbeat. Although every song was brilliant, my personal country rock favourite was The Devil Went Down to Georgia, as it involved his clear vocals as well. More of the voice, please, for future shows!

What made this a special show was the fact that it became a family affair. Whilst Blue Violin was on stage, his young son was on the door checking tickets and his wife supported him. Generally, everyone was made to feel welcome, whether on stage or off, and you felt like you were part of an extended family as he shared his life with us. It was a nice touch to an extremely pleasant evening.

Thunderstruck was electric, immersive and extremely enjoyable. A hidden musical gem of the fringe that is not to be missed.
