Re/Sista Cabaret. The Circus Yard, Big Puck: Brighton Fringe

Given the fact that we are currently in uncertain and troubling times, the popular trend of needing a safe space to feel like you are part of something inclusive and accepting is thriving. Re/Sista Cabaret is one of those particular events that leans towards anyone who classifies themselves as female in any way, shape, or form. Combining circus, physical comedy and sensual acts, Lavrak Circus doesn’t just create a space like this, but an immersive event which seeks to stand out in the crowd against those who try to stop anyone from being authentically themselves.

It needs to be noted that Re/Sista Cabaret is very much for adults only and not for anyone under 18 due to the content portrayed, so anyone trying to bring little ones to this event expecting a family friendly show like one family did on the day of review, this is not suitable for them. However, what we did experience was an event that was entertaining, fun, and shocking in a good way. Under the watchful eye of our glamourous compere, we were invited to switch off for an hour or so whilst our cares washed away. She had the right amount of cheekiness, bravado, and warmth that made everyone feel welcome and safe throughout the whole show. The immersive part of her link, as she included us, was well thought out, and she went out of her way to make sure all those she spoke to were looked after and was mindful of those who didn’t necessarily want the attention.

The acts in general were of an extremely high standard, but there were two who stood out from all of them due to their originality and sassiness. One was Lola, who strode into the ring dressed as a scantily clad dominatrix-style goth with a feel for some interesting balancing tricks with two platform poles. She had a great feel for how far she could push her sensual dance moves in between balancing, plus commanded the audience’s attention with a strength that would make even the toughest individual stop what they were doing to watch her. Lola’s balancing tricks likewise had a presence that made you gasp with each smooth transition she made on the poles, that she kept you on the edge of your seat with what was to come next.

The final act Luciana, also made a great impression on us as she dazzled with not just a beautiful hula hoop act, but showcased a flair for political comedy as she satirised Donald Trump with a suit that was torn away before her hoops began and a Spitting Image style mask. The physical traits she showed as she portrayed the American President were sharp and again, smoothly transitioned into the next trait that had us laughing heartily. As for her hoop and dance routine, Luciana showed her skills in such a way that kept us engaged till the end and left us wanting more.

Re/Sista Cabaret is something that will change with each act on offer, but nevertheless is feisty, sassy and creatively inclusive. One that is great to enjoy and embrace the freedom on offer.
